Long Ride

I finally picked up my bike from the LBS and everything is actually fixed!!  The power tap cable was replaced and the new one was installed.  I got them to throw in a free tune up for all the troubles.  Yah!

This morning I rode with a bunch of people from the Markham Triathlon Club (I didn't know it existed).  Its a loosely organized group of triathletes that communicate via Google group.  Last week they started riding at 8:30 am which was way too late for me.  Clearly not a lot of them have kids.  This week they were meeting up at 8:30 am again but Rom had to start earlier as his kid had a birthday party in the afternoon so I met up with him at 6:30 am but rode 40 minutes in the basement first.  The three of us rode for 45 km and then met up with the rest of the group.  It was a pretty big group of almost 20 triathletes.  Clearly the biggest group I've ever rode with.  I was a little tired from the previous ride but it seemed to take forever to get going.  The disadvantage of riding with a big group.  We took off and there were a lot of fast riders.  I struggled to keep up when I got a flat tire.  Rom waited for me while I fumbled around with the tire when another rider heading south bound stopped and asked if we needed help.  I said we were ok and then he asked me if my name was Takeda (yes).  It was Peter F.  He's my younger brothers' friend and has been been doing triathlons for years.  I saw him at Muskoka 70.3 two years ago.  Small world!  He's also with NRG and going up to their IMMT training camp next month so that will be good to know someone up there.  All this chit chat had Rom getting impatient as I continued to fumble around with the tire.  He actually grabbed the tire and put the inner tube on for me as I was talking to Peter.  I emptied my saddle bag and looked to inflate my tire with the CO2 cartilage but had forgotten  to put the value in the saddle bag.  Once again, I had forgotten a critical piece for my saddle bag and it goes to show the importance of riding with someone else.

Finally we were back on the road and Rom hammered it to catch up with the group but they were long gone.  I was bagged and struggled to keep up with him but he dropped my like a bad habit despite trying to draft off him.  We finally reached the turn around point and I was bagged.  We rested for a couple of minutes and then headed back home.  I knew this was going to be a painful ride as I was pretty tired and I was running low on water.  Before I started riding, I drank one 710 ml (24 ozs) bottle of water and then during my indoor ride, I drank another bottle.  During the first part of the ride, I drank another bottle which I refilled when we were meeting up with the group.  During the second part of the ride, I drank another four bottles of water and mixture.  Heading back home from the turn around, I had less than one bottle of water and mixture.  This was going to be trouble as it was warm and I always drink a ton of water and we were about 45 km from home.  Rom put the pedal to the metal and I tried to draft off him but he was too strong and left me behind but at every major intersection (about 5 km apart) he stopped and waited for me to catch up.  We stopped at a garage and I asked to refill my bottle but they only had water from a well and they advise me not to drink it.  I kept falling further and further behind until we hit a golf course and I stopped off in the club house.  I filled my bottle and drained it and refilled it again.  I immediately felt so much better and in fact I was able to keep up to Rom for the rest of the ride home.

This was the longest ride I've been on and including all the stops and flat tire, my total time was seven hours but my actual ride time was 5.5 hours, rode 145 km and drank about eight bottles of water/mixture for about 5.6 liters (about 1.5 gallons).  I think I'll have to make some adjustments to the new bike fit as I felt uncomfortable with the current set up.  Next week Rom wants to go 160 km....ugh.

A Letter from Mark Zuckerberg

A Letter from Mark Zuckerberg
About Facebook’s IPO

MENLO PARK, CA (The Borowitz Report) – On the eve of Facebook’s IPO, Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg published the following letter to potential investors:

Dear Potential Investor:

For years, you've wasted your time on Facebook.  Now here’s your chance to waste your money on it, too.

Tomorrow is Facebook’s IPO, and I know what some of you are thinking.  How will Facebook be any different from the dot-com bubble of the early 2000’s?

For one thing, those bad dot-com stocks were all speculation and hype, and weren’t based on real businesses.  Facebook, on the other hand, is based on a solid foundation of angry birds and imaginary sheep.

Second, Facebook is the most successful social network in the world, enabling millions to share information of no interest with people they barely know.

Third, every time someone clicks on a Facebook ad, Facebook makes money.  And while no one has ever done this on purpose, millions have done it by mistake while drunk.  We totally stole this idea from iTunes.

Finally, if you invest in Facebook, you’ll be far from alone.  As a result of using Facebook for the past few years, over 900 million people in the world have suffered mild to moderate brain damage, impairing their ability to make reasoned judgments.  These will be your fellow Facebook investors.

With your help, if all goes as planned tomorrow, Facebook’s IPO will net $100 billion.  To put that number in context, it would take JP Morgan four or five trades to lose that much money.

One last thing: what will, I, Mark Zuckerberg, do with the $18 billion I’m expected to earn from Facebook’s IPO?  Well, I’m considering buying Greece, but that would still leave me with $18 billion.  LOL.

Friend me,

Mark

Friday Fails

So I "should" be picking up my bike with my "working" power tap from the LBS later this afternoon.  We'll see how that goes.  Clearly my faith in their ability to fix my bike is......low.  Also, yesterday, I went to the sports doctor again (I'm putting his kids through university) to have another look at my foot.  Wednesday's ride set off some swelling and by the afternoon, I was limping pretty bad.  I took some anti-inflams Wednesday night and that knocked the swelling down by morning but I want to know why its still swelling.  Doc thinks its "probably" tenodnits but just to be sure, I wanted a bone scan to rule out a stress fracture.  Ironman Mont-Tremblant is three months away and I have a Half Ironman in five weeks and I can't run more than 10 feet but it is getting better.

Anyways, here are the Friday Fails.  Have a great weekend-its the long weekend for us Canadians so I might ride outside three days in a roll as the weather is supposed to be awesome.

And It Continues......

So the unmentioned LBS, where I was having all my issues order a new power tap cable that connects the head to the hub as the old one is frayed and not reading properly (ie cadence 217 while watts are 30).  They ordered it on Saturday and assured me that they should get it Monday or Tuesday.  I rode Monday and Wednesday (today) without the benefit of my power tap so I had no idea about my cadence or watts.

Tuesday afternoon the LBS called me and said my parts were in and it would take 10 minutes to install.  Great!  I'll bring my bike in on Wednesday afternoon.  This morning I rode and had some minor pain in my left hamstring (never had that before) and my right knee.  Seeing that the LBS guarantees their fits for 12 months, I get my power tap fixed and refitted at the same time (note:  this would be the third fit in five days).

I get to the LBS and they informed me they have the part and will install it in a couple of minutes and then I can get fitted.  The mechanic is dealing with someone else while I'm waiting and when he's done, he walks over to my bike and picks up the part.  One look at it and says, "that's the wrong part."  ARE YOU KIDDING ME???  They ordered a part for a wireless power tap.  I have a wired power tap and that's the part I need.  The wire.  Unbelievable!  I'm stunned.  Anyways they re-ordered the part and said it would be in on Friday.

With nothing else I could do, I went over and got refitted.  He dropped the seat, almost to the exact spot where it was before and removed one of the spacers.  How much difference it was from the original fit is hard for me to say but it looks pretty close.

I left my bike at the LBS with the power tap head unit on it.  I'm not riding until Saturday morning so why bother bringing it back home and then taking it down to the LBS again.  I wonder what else will go wrong (missing power tap head unit)?

For my troubles, I asked for a tune-up.  The mechanic said "he'll take care of me."  Whatever that means....

I'm The Unluckiest Athlete In The World

On Wednesday (after spending Tuesday night in emergency) I took my bike in to a local bike shop (LBS).  I decided to get a compact crank with the mountains of Tremblant looming in less than 100 days.  I also decided to get a fit as I found I was squirming in my seat and always pushing back.  I skipped Wednesday's ride as I was still tired from getting back from the hospital after midnight and my foot was killing (gout, pseudo gout, turf toe, big toe capsule or whatever).  I scheduled my bike fit for Friday at 3:00 pm, that way the LBS would have plenty of time to order the crank and install it and have it for Saturday's four hour ride.  No problemo

On Friday, I showed up to my fit and I brought my power tap head as I was interested to see if any adjustments would yield more power.  I hoped on the bike trainer while the fitter watched me ride.  I looked down at my power tap and there were weird readings.  The cadence was running at 130 while there were no watts.  Then the cadence disappeared and the watts were reading 20.  Also there was no heartbeat (I guess I was almost dead).  I mentioned it to the fitter and he shrugged his shoulder and said the guys in the shop could take a look at it afterwards.  After an hour or so we were finished.  He had raised the seat and pushed it forward.  He also raised the handlebars, extended the aero bars.  Overall it felt ok but I was annoyed that I couldn't get any readings from the power tap to see if these changes increased the watts.  We wheeled the bike over to the mechanic where they fooled around with the power tap for about an hour.  I was annoyed but they finally seemed to have it fixed after changing the hub batteries (even though I changed them in February).

Saturday morning, Rom and the boys were riding but weren't leaving until 8:30 am.  Way too late for me as I started riding at 5:15 am.  I rode inside for 45 minutes, watching another episode of 24.  There were no cadence or watts reading.  Grrrr.  at 6:30 am, I took the bike outside and presto, the readings suddenly appeared but soon I was spinning at 140 revolutions per minute while my watts were at 20.  Then everything stopped working.  At this point, there was nothing I could do so I just rode.  I definitely noticed the difference the compact crank made as the same hills I climbed last week, this week I rode in a harder gear and faster.

Somewhere around the 2.5 hour mark, my right knee started to ache and my neck and back were killing me.  Odd, these were the exact complaints I had BEFORE the fit.  I looked down at my seat post and the tape that marked where the stem before the fit (I didn't get a chance to remark it) was exactly in the same spot.  Huh?  The new fit had raised by about 2 centimeters (one inch).   I stopped by the side of the road and checked the post.  Yup, it dropped back to where it was originally and with the handle bars about one inch higher, that explains the neck and knee pain.  Annoyed, I pulled out my saddle bag and emptied onto the the road.  No Allan key!!  CRAP.  No wonder I had so much room in my saddle bag and I was more than 40 km from home.  I considered calling for a pick up when two cyclists stopped and asked if I needed help.  HELL YA!!  I borrowed their Allan key and did a quick adjustment.  I thanked them and they took off however as soon as I jumped on my bike, I instantly realized that the seat was too high and the saddle nose was pointed up.  The boys didn't like that.  It was an uncomfortable long long ride back home.

As soon as I got back home around 10 am, I phoned the LBS and expressed my displeasure and wanted to be refitted that day.  They had a different fitter and arranged for 11:30 am appointment.  The only problem was that Vanessa had a dance recital at 1 pm so I had to be back at home.  The fitting only took about 30 minutes but checking out the power tap and another problem I discovered while I was riding was that when the fitter extended the aero bars forward, he stretched the cables so tight I could barely turn the handle bars left or right.  Duhhh!!  There was no way they would be finished in time so I agreed to leave the bike and come back around 5:00 pm.  That should give them plenty of time to fix and figure out all the problems, right?

Nope.  I came back down to the LBS around 5:15 pm they were done working on it but when I inquired about the power tap.......well they still couldn't figure out the problem.  By 5:50 pm (they close at 6:00 pm) the mechanic finally figured out to unwrap the protective cord and it appears the wire leading to the head unit is frayed.  Great.  Just order me another wire ASAP but they cost $100.  I toyed with the idea of converting this one to a wireless power tap but they said it couldn't be done.  Whatever, just order the wire.

So I was greatly disappointed in the LBS as they:
            1.  didn't tighten the screws in the seat after the fit
            2.  perhaps, broke my power tap.  It worked fine when I took it in
            3.  didn't taken into consideration, what would happen to the cables when he extended the aero bars

Not exactly the service I expected considering all the great things I had heard about this store.  The LBS that works with my coach offers us 10% discount but the service is brutal.  Twice I've ordered items, leaving my cell number and I have not received any calls back.

One thing about ex-coach is that he ran a LBS out of his garage and was very efficient.  The trouble was that he was always trying to sell stuff to you so you didn't know if it was something you really needed, or he was just trying to make a buck.

Oh yea, just as my gout, pseudo gout, turf toe, big toe capsule or whatever, is getting better, along comes a new foot pain.  My foot is swollen and painful to walk (in a different spot than before).  More anti-inflams.  Great, and because I'm on meds, I can't drink any beer!!!

I'm Such A Moron Part ll

So after the trip to the emergency room the other day, I laid off the anti-inflams but the emergency doctor did give me a new prescription for a powerful pain killer and more anti-inflams but not to take any more until today (Thursday).  My foot has been killing and walking has become more painful and difficult.  I took the pain killers a couple of times and it seemed to help a bit.  The warning label clearly indicates NOT to take them if driving but this morning, my foot was aching, swollen and warm.  I soaked it in a bucket of cold water and that helped.  Swimming was cancelled this morning as the maintenance staff must have slept in and there was no one to let us in.  Swimming helps my foot feel much better (why I have no idea) but by the time I was leaving for work, I was limping again.  I took two pills of the anti-inflams and one of the pain killers and then headed into work.

I have about a 40 minute drive into work and its always stop and go traffic.  Around 30 minutes later, I was getting very very sleepy.  I pulled into a Costco parking lot with the intention of having a quick nap in the empty parking lot (I've done this a couple of times before) but I noticed there were no cars lined up for the Costco Gas so I gassed up instead.  The fresh air helped wake me up so I drove the rest of the way to work.  Once I got there, I thought about closing my door and turning off the lights as I was still drowsy but made it through the morning.  I decided to go swim at the local community center to make up for this morning.  I was feeling pretty hungry but had a Cliff Bar.  I've swam a couple of times at the center and it’s a nice pool but several years ago, I almost got into a fight with the head lifeguard as he didn't like the way I was swimming.  He has since moved on, so I go there once in a while for my third swim of the week.

There were the usual suspects swimming in the fast lane but this time there was a guy who was older than me but way faster.  Between the two of us, most of the breast strokers stayed away.  Normally I just swim a simple 3 x 1,000 meters but that gets pretty boring so I took one of the workouts that coach expected me to do (which I never).  Just to mix things up, she put in some backstroke.  I started swimming on my back but became really dizzy and nauseated.  I kept crashing into the lane markers so I switched back to front crawl and finished the rest of the set.

Once back into the office, I felt really light headed but I had a meeting.  I quickly ate my lunch and then went into my meeting.  Afterwards, I felt a little better and my headache subsided but I still googled "anti-inflams and ODing.

I think I'll wait a little longer before taking more anti-inflams.

I'm Such A Moron

I went to the doctor yesterday about my foot. Every once in a while I get an inflamed big toe. I was tested for gout but sit came up negative then I went to another doctor and he said I have pseudo gout. They are very similar and equally painful. It appears out of nowhere and last several days. The pain sometimes gets so bad that I can barely walk. Usually anti-inflams do the trick and I'm back to normal in three or four days I went to my sports doctor yesterday and said, nope I don't have gout but rather it's capsule of the big toe or something like that (turf toe?). Anyways he wasn't worried at all and said I'd be able to run in a couple of days. I asked him for a prescription for anti-inflams but he gave me three boxes of free sample he had in his office. I glanced at the instructions and took some pills as I was late for a meeting. The instructions said to take 400 mg the first day and 200 mg the days after. I thought each box, which contained three pills, was 200 mg so I took two boxes yesterday (6 pills) and then another box this morning after swimming. Later in the day my foot really started to ache. I called the doctor back wondering if he could fax or email another prescription as I was out of the pills. Through his receptionist, he informed me that he gave me a seven day supply. Uh oh By dinner time my foot was killing me as it was aching and had swollen up. I filled a bucket with cold water and then dumped ice and stuck my foot in it for two hours. That did the trick as the throbbing went away but my foot was stil swollen. Tammy came home and asked why my foot was still hurting if I took the anti-inflams. I told her I used them all up and she figured I took 1,200 mg yesterday and another 600 mg today. She freaked out and called Tele-Health which are staffed by registered nurses. They strongly suggested that I go immediately to emergency and get checked out, so here I sit waiting and waiting and waiting....The funny thing is, despite the overdose of anti-inflams, my foot still hurts.

Friday Fails

Just a quick update.  I've almost recovered from my cold other than the odd couphing fit or running nose.  This week is a recovery week but I switched my long ride this Saturday (four hours) for last Saturday (one hour).  I felt like crap last Saturday morning so I didn't ride but felt better in the afternoon.  I rode outside for the first time anxious to see if all the interval work would pay off.  Nope.  I rode 30 km in 1:15 for an average speed of 25 km/hr.  I rode the same route that I've ridden a hundred times before but this time the hills seemed much steeper and there was a pretty good headwind.  I was still hacking and coughing and constantly blowing snot rockets to the left and to the right.  But the bottom line is I need to start riding outside more.  For tomorrow's ride, I'll have to ride 90 minutes or so on the trainer and then switch over to riding outside as I need to finish my workout by 9:30 am.  Do the math:  four hour ride plus 30 minute run - what time do I need to start in order to finish by 9:30 am?  Yikes

Yesterday I was supposed to do a light 45 minute recovery run.  The top of my left foot was bugging me and I figured I would use this as a test run by going slow.  Rebecca wanted to come with me so she rode her bike on the sidewalk while I ran.  Slow run indeed.  My average speed was 7:00 min/km as this was the first time Rebecca had ridden her bike that far from home.  No worries about my foot as there was no speed work yesterday.  However, it seems my Pseudo Gout has returned in my toe.  Pseudo Gout is similiar to regular gout and just as painful.  It appears out of no where and then disappears after a couple of days.  I find curling my toes as it seems to move the calcium crystals out of the toe joint.  Hopefully it won't last.

Anyways, here are the Friday Fails.......

Ouch!

Boxer Lavarn Harvell connects to the head of Tony Pietrantonio for a knockout during their third round of light heavyweight boxing fight in Atlantic City, N.J., on Saturday.

An astonishing photo from a weekend heavyweight bout in Atlantic City shows a boxer’s face jiggling like a bowl of jello
